Canada tokes at 4 times the world average

I’m finally proud to be a Canadian!

Canada pot flag

According to a recent UN report, Canada tokes at 4 times the world average:

Canadians use marijuana at four times the world average, making Canada the leader of the industrialized world in cannabis consumption, a recent United Nations report found.

The 2007 World Drug Report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime says that 16.8 per cent of Canadians aged 15 to 64 smoked marijuana or used another cannabis product in 2006. The world average is 3.8 per cent.

But it looks like we have some serious smoking to do if Canadians really want to take on the world leaders in marijuana consumption:

In the report, Canada ranks fifth in the world for marijuana use, behind Ghana at 21.5 per cent, Zambia, 17.7 per cent, and Papua New Guinea and Micronesia with 29 per cent each.

Anyone up for a trip to Micronesia?

Until then, why don’t we shake this square world and blast off for Kicksville:

Then again, there’s been a “spike in arrests for simple possession of cannabis” with “Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa and Halifax all reported increases of between 20 and 50 per cent in 2006.”

It seems clear police are taking a cue from the New Government of Canada’sTM withdrawl of the decriminalization bill — which the phoney Liberals trumpeted about to burnish their hip and progressive credentials but never even brought to a vote.

Craig Torso… Always looking at the negative side of things. And although your point is true, today I’m going to celebrate our notoriety with a big bowl. Which, I guess, is just like any other day.

    Spread the herb, brother!

    Rick Swerve,

I like your style. It’s on days like today that I wish I was an honorary Canadian -or at least in Canada surrounded by the lush greenery that is the magical state of things there. Nice re-mix of the Canadian flag, by the way.

Wish I could take credit for the flag, Jim, but it was one of the first images that came up for the search “toking”. I think it was from an economist article about Canada, but highly appropriate.

In terms of style, I just happened to indulge in some of that “lush greenery” a few minutes before checking the site. Although, I’m obviously not alone in this past time around these parts.

A local free newspaper today said that the report’s findings imply “that British Columbians thereby lead the industrialized world in pot consumption.”

Guess that’s part of the reason why I decided to move here.

And yet, Vancouver still manages to be one of the one of the most desirable cities in the world to live in according to those studies. Even with more pot use than any other city in the world.

Yes,it must be a very dangerous drug.

Holland has also proven that “decriminalization” — or whatever it is that they have over there — does not increase a society’s use of a drug — seeing that their use is much lower than a number of countries where it is illegal. People decide for their own reasons, not because of laws.

Jesus. That comment is longer than most of my posts. I must be more herbed-up than I thought.

    Jim,

By the way, I like your style too, man.

But do you have to use so many cuss words?
